How We are Preparing for Baby – Here’s my list on what we are doing to prepare for the upcoming birth of our baby boy!
How We are Preparing for Baby
Hi Everyone, I want to share with you how we are preparing for our baby boy who is due in early October!
His due date is coming up fast and I am hanging close to home, avoiding driving (because it’s uncomfortable with my big bump), so, I am taking care of the many things in the house on my list to get ready for baby boy’s arrival.
I love this Carter’s “Hunk” long-sleeve onesie which came as a set, I found it on Amazon Prime below:
#1 – Washing Baby Clothes – I am washing clothes that I have purchased for him. I am using Dreft laundry detergent since the baby’s skin is so sensitive in the beginning, just like I did with my daughter. I am making sure to keep all the baby clothes separate from my daughter’s clothes to make it easier to find things fast when needed.
I picked up this Official Red Sox onsie (above) the last time I visited my family in New England this Summer. I found a similar one on Amazon Prime below:
#2 – Reusing Baby Clothes that we have – I will be going through my daughter’s newborn clothes to see if there’s any gender neutral clothes that I can use for baby boy.
I love this Carter’s Rocket Ship onesie which is available on Amazon Prime in a set:
#3 – Looking for a Dresser – I am looking for a white (because this color will match the room) dresser so I can keep baby boy’s clothes and other items separate from my daughter’s clothes. I don’t want to spend a lot of money on this and I would be fine with getting a used one in good condition. Something along the lines of this white, modern-looking dress would be ideal:
I love this Carter’s lighting bolt bodysuit which is available on Amazon Prime:
#4 – Set up the Pack ‘n Play – We have a pack ‘n play that we used for our daughter, we need to bring it downstairs and set it up and make sure it’s clean. We have a Graco Pack ‘n Play (different color) that has a bassinet like this:
#5 – Set up the Bassinet – We have a bassinet that we used for our daughter, we need to bring it downstairs and set it up and make sure it’s clean.
#6 – Prepping the Baby’s Bedroom – We are making a guest bedroom which is already painted blue into the baby’s room. I want to prepare this room even though most likely he will be sharing my daughter’s room and be sleeping in-room in our bedroom. I have many ideas about how to further decorate his room but I am not making it a priority because that’s just the icing on the cake and not immediately necessary since I am so close to my due date. The room is pretty much done, it would just need decorative details to tailor it to be his room. Since he will be mostly sleeping in-room with Eric and I, for us, it’s just not a priority.
#7 – Cleaning the House – My nesting instinct is at an all-time high, so, I am looking for areas to clean, making sure floors are cleared of any junk and clean, clutter thrown out, bathrooms, pet areas, surfaces disinfected – you get the picture.
#8 – Getting out the Baby Toys – As my daughter grew, I put away her baby toys upstairs in bins. I will be going through those bins and setting aside the baby toys for baby boy. I don’t think we need anything new but I want to do an inventory of what we have. Sofie the Giraffe is one of my favorite infant toys, we also have one of the books:
#9 – Bottles and Formula – I fully intend to breastfeed, just as I did with my daughter, but I am a planner at heart and I want to make sure I have bottles and formula at hand, just in case.
#10 – Hook up the new Dishwasher – I want to have this hooked up before the baby comes because I want to have an easy way to sterilize bottles, etc. and I want to minimize the time I spend washing dishes. Have you been following our kitchen renovation posts? I mentioned the dishwasher in our last post: Kitchen Renovation Update Week of 9-17-2017.
#11 – Prepping my Daughter for the Baby’s Arrival – We have been talking to my daughter a lot about the baby boy’s arrival and we will continue to prepare her and talk about how it will go since it will be a huge adjustment for her going from being an only child to having a sibling. I am really aware of making sure that Eric and I do things to make her feel special and loved.
#12 – Getting Ahead in My Work – I have been making and shooting recipes more than I ever have so that I have many recipes ready to go for the next few months just in case I can’t or won’t feel like doing my regular work load after the baby comes. I want to be able to focus on my newborn and give him the attention he deserves. I also have recipes from my contributors which are planned for October and beyond.
#13 – Access to Help with Childcare – I have support from my husband, baby sitters from Care.com, mom’s in my network, my daughter’s school and family in case I need help with childcare. It’s really important to know that after one gives birth just in case you have a doctor’s appointment or something else comes up.
#14 – Cleaning My Daughter’s Room – At the time of my writing this post, my daughter’s room is bursting with toys and clothes. I am sure we will have new things for the new baby coming after he’s born. My daughter always is getting new/used toys from friends and relatives. This influx in children’s stuff is something that has to be actively managed all the time – you would be amazed at how quickly things add up. We choose to be able to fit all her toys and things in her room and not let kids toys drift around the house, with the exception of one kids table in the kitchen area and some storage of things upstairs. I need to go through all her stuff, get it to a manageable level, donate or bring things to the children’s 2nd hand store anything that I can. (related posts on LLS: Minimalism for Us, Maintaining A Minimalist Clothes Closet).
#15 – Adjusting the baby seat – We already have a baby seat but the straps need to be adjusted and it will need to be put into my car. We have the Graco Click Connect 40 (not this exact color), which we used for our daughter:
#16 – New Car – We have been thinking about replacing my car with a larger car with more space for baby seats. It think this is one of those things that we will eventually get to, so it’s not high on our list of priorities but it’s something to think about for the near future.
And that’s my list! (so far) – This list seems a little long and I am sure I will think of other things to do, as that early October due date looms near.
Since this is our 2nd child, I am less anxious about the unknown and feel like there’s not as much to prepare as I had with my my daughter’s birth which is a huge relief. If I don’t get to everything on the list, I am not going to worry about it. Plenty of these things can be done after he’s here too.
This is just my personal list but I hope this list helps other expectant mom’s as they think and prepare for their newborns 🙂
Are you expecting? What are you doing to prepare for your new little one? Please let me know in the comments below! Best, ~Sara
