How To Regrow Romaine Lettuce

Growing your own vegetables is a rewarding and sustainable way to bring fresh produce to your kitchen. If you’re new to gardening or just looking for a simple and cost-effective way to add some greenery to your home, regrowing romaine lettuce is a great place to start. Not only is it easy and fun, but it’s also a great way to reduce food waste and enjoy fresh greens all year round. In this post, we’ll guide you through the simple steps of regrowing romaine lettuce in your own kitchen, so you can enjoy a sustainable source of greens anytime you want.

Materials

  • 1 Romaine Lettuce base cutting, or more
  • shallow cup
  • water

Tools

  • Chef's knife
  • cutting board

Instructions

    1. Prepare the Lettuce Base: To regrow romaine lettuce, you’ll need the base of a fresh head of lettuce. Start by cutting off the bottom inch of the lettuce head, where the roots grow. Be sure to leave about an inch of lettuce attached to the base.
    2. Add Water: Place the lettuce base in a jar or glass filled with about an inch of water. Be sure to change the water every few days to prevent bacteria growth.
    3. Wait for the Roots to Grow: Place the jar or glass in a sunny spot, and wait for the roots to grow. This should take about 7-10 days. Once the roots have grown to about an inch, you can transplant the lettuce to a pot or directly into your garden.
    4. Transplant the Lettuce: Fill a pot or container with potting soil, and make a small hole for the lettuce base. Carefully place the base in the soil, and cover the roots with soil. Water the soil thoroughly.
    5. Care for Your Lettuce: Place the pot or container in a sunny spot, and water the soil regularly to keep it moist. Your lettuce should start to grow within a few days, and you can harvest the leaves as they grow. Be sure to cut the leaves at the base, and leave the base in the soil to regrow.
