Update 5/22/2023 – Hey everyone! I have some unfortunate news to share regarding the recipe I posted on my blog back in 2021. It turns out that the company Nabisco has discontinued their “Famous Chocolate Wafers” that are required for the recipe. I know many of you were excited to try it out, or regularly come back to use this recipe, so I’ve been searching for alternative ingredients that are available here in the USA. Please look for a new section below on all the ingredient alternatives for the Famous Chocolate Wafers.
This Famous Chocolate Refrigerator Roll Recipe had only 2 required ingredients (Famous Chocolate Wafers and whipped topping) and 2 optional ingredients, for toppings (rainbow sprinkles and maraschino cherries). Try this easy-to-prepare recipe for your next dessert!

Famous Chocolate Refrigerator Roll Recipe
Hi Everyone, are you ready for an easy, quite retro, no-bake, dessert recipe?
Look no further than this Refrigerator Roll Recipe!
Firstly, there are only 2 required ingredients (Famous Chocolate Wafers and whipped topping), and secondly, 2 optional ingredients, for toppings (rainbow sprinkles and maraschino cherries).
Because we believe in easy, versatile recipes, we want to present this lovely version of an “icebox-style” cake.
I love this recipe because it’s so low-stress, it’s easy to make with kids helping.
Alternative Ingredients to Discontinued Famous Chocolate Wafers
We are so sad to learn that Famous Chocolate Wafers were discontinued in February 2023)! After doing research, I added this section to address this issue and offer some ingredient alternatives. If anyone tries any of these options, let us know how it works out in the comments.
Here are a few options you can use instead (I also added this information to the Notes section of the printable recipe card at the end of the post):
- Chocolate Wafer Cookies: Look for other brands of chocolate wafer cookies that are easily found in the USA. Although they won’t be exactly the same as the “Famous Chocolate Wafers,” they should still work well in the recipe. Some popular brands to consider are Nabisco’s Oreo Thin Crisps, Anna’s Swedish Thins, or Back to Nature’s Fudge Mint Cookies.
- Chocolate Graham Crackers: Another option is to substitute chocolate graham crackers for the chocolate wafers. They have a similar texture and flavor profile, and you can either crush them or use them whole in the recipe. Keebler and Honey Maid are a couple of well-known brands that offer chocolate graham crackers.
- Homemade Chocolate Wafers: If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even try making your own chocolate wafers from scratch. There are plenty of recipes available online that guide you through the process step-by-step. Homemade wafers allow for customization and give you control over the ingredients used.
Remember to adjust the quantities as needed and ensure that the alternative ingredients you choose have a similar texture and taste to the original “Famous Chocolate Wafers.” I hope these alternatives help, and I apologize for any inconvenience caused by the discontinuation of the wafers. Happy baking!

This recipe is very similar to the recipe on the Famous Chocolate Wafer package, “Famous Chocolate Refrigerator Roll” but not exactly the same, it’s my version of it.
My dad told me that this is exactly the kind of recipe (icebox cake) that my grandmother, his mom, would make back in the 1950s and ’60s, so it’s very special to me that I’m drawn to this simple, family-friendly kind of recipe. It just makes everything come full-circle. I love a good retro recipe!
Recipe Notes
- For Decorating: Add the sprinkles, amount to taste, and top with maraschino cherries to the top.
- For Serving: Slice perpendicular to the wafers to get striped or “zebra-like” slices. Makes 14 servings.
