Angel Food Cupcakes
Hi Everyone, I love this recipe because you make a semi-homemade cupcake recipe that is delightful, beautiful, and customizable with different toppings depending on what holiday or event you serve it for.
This recipe uses boxed Angel Food cake mix made as cupcakes, you can make homemade whipped topping/stabilized whipped cream and decorate it as I did in these photos or with sprinkles or other toppings you want.
I made small, bite-sized cupcakes and regular-sized cupcakes to show you the difference in size and how they look – so you have options.
The small, bite-sized cupcakes bake very fast, making them a quicker option, which is nice if you are short on time.
Recipes You’ll Need
If you want to make these Angel Food Cupcakes like the ones in the photos, you will need the following recipes (all links open in new windows):
- (Stabilized) Vanilla Whipped Cream or, for a vegan option, you could use, Vegan Coconut Whipped Cream and Frosting
- Additionally, you have the option of making your own vanilla extract, How to Make Homemade Vanilla Extract
- For the sugared violets, you can follow our recipe tutorial, Sugaring Flowers
Of course, you can save time and get store-bought whipped cream or whipped topping, pure vanilla extract and sprinkles, or other cupcake/cake decorations – they will not come out exactly like the cupcakes in the photos but do what works for you!
What holidays and special events can you make this Angel Food Cupcakes recipe for?
Here are some ideas for holidays and events/gatherings that these Angel Food Cupcakes can be served at:
This cupcake recipe gives very strong spring, Easter, May Day, Brunch-y, Mother’s Day, Summer-y holiday, birthday and wedding, bridal & baby shower vibes but really, they can be served for any holiday and the toppings can adjusted to match that specific event.
I made these cupcakes for a family gathering and party and they were so beautiful and delightful to have.
I like them because they are light as air when you eat them and not heavy light a lot of sweet cupcake recipes out there. Also, the whipped cream, is also light, as opposed to buttercream, and makes a perfect partner to frost these pretty little cupcakes.

Angel Food Cupcakes
This delightful and easy Angel Food Cupcakes recipe is topped with stabilized whipped cream as frosting and garnished with fresh mint leaves and sugared violets.
Ingredients
Cupcake Base
- 1 box (16 oz) Betty Crockerâ„¢ Angel Food Cake Mix
- 1 1/3 cups water
Topping
Instructions
- Preparation: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line a cupcake pan with cupcake paper liners. Gather your ingredients.
- Make the cupcake base: In a large mixing bowl, add the Angel Food cake mix and the 1 and 1/3 cups water, using an electric mixer, on low speed for the first 30 seconds, and then the remaining 1 minute on medium speed, mix the ingredients together until they are combined. Using a silicone baking spatula fill the prepared cupcake time with the batter 3/4 full.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-20 minutes (regular-size cupcakes, see recipe notes below, for small, bite-sized cupcakes), until golden and cooked through. Keep a close eye on the cupcakes as they are baking because this batter can burn easily! When the cupcakes are done, allow them to cook completely before adding any toppings.
- Decorate: When they are completely cool, you can frost the tops of cupcakes with store-bought whipped cream or whipped topping or you can make homemade whipped cream (opens in a new window). You can decorate with sprinkles and/or edible sugared flowers (opens in a new window)or violets.
Notes
- Baking Time: The baking time range for regular-size cupcakes is 12-20 minutes and for small, bite-size cupcakes 12-15 minutes. Keep a close eye on the cupcakes as they are baking because this batter can burn easily!
