Instant Pot Whole Chicken
Hi Everyone, one of my favorite ways to make a whole chicken is right in the Instant Pot.
It’s so easy and “hands-off” – I can set the Instant Pot to cook the chicken, walk away, and come back when it’s done – no “babysitting” the pot on a stove or checking as it bakes or roasts.
Ingredients
- 1 chicken, thawed
- salt
- water

- Instant Pot

Tips for Success:
- Use a Fresh Whole Chicken: Opt for a fresh, high-quality chicken for the best results. Avoid using frozen chicken, as it may affect the cooking time and texture. If you use frozen chicken, make sure to thaw it completely.
- Season Generously: Don’t be shy with the seasoning! Rub the chicken inside and out with your favorite herbs, spices, and a dash of salt and pepper to enhance its flavor.
- Trivet Placement: Place a trivet or a steamer basket at the bottom of the Instant Pot to elevate the chicken slightly. This prevents the chicken from sitting in its own juices and ensures even cooking.
- Add Liquid: Include a cup of chicken broth, water, or your favorite cooking liquid in the Instant Pot. This helps create steam, which contributes to the chicken’s tenderness and moisture.
- Natural Pressure Release: Allow the Instant Pot to do a natural pressure release for at least 10 minutes after cooking. This ensures the chicken remains juicy and prevents it from becoming tough.
- Check Internal Temperature: Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the chicken, aiming for 165°F (74°C) at the thickest part. This guarantees the chicken is fully cooked and safe to eat.
- Broil for Crispy Skin: For a crispy skin finish, place the cooked chicken in the oven under the broiler for a few minutes. Keep a close eye to prevent burning.
- Let it Rest: Once cooked, allow the chicken to rest for a few minutes before carving. This helps the juices redistribute, resulting in more succulent and flavorful meat.
- Customize with Veggies: Add some chopped vegetables around the chicken before cooking to create a one-pot meal. Carrots, potatoes, and onions work great!
- Save the Broth: Don’t waste the delicious cooking liquid! Strain and save the broth for soups, stews, or cooking grains in the future.
Follow these tips, and your Instant Pot whole chicken will turn out perfectly tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor every time!

Ingredients
- 1 chicken, thawed
- kosher salt
- water
Instructions
- Place a fresh, thawed, or frozen chicken in the metal liner of an instant pot. It should be small enough to take up 3/4 of the liner so that it's not too large.
- Set the lid to the "Sealing" setting. Press the "Poultry" button or manual and set it to cook for 15 minutes. Remember that it takes 15 minutes to come up to pressure and 15 minutes to come down from pressure.
- When it's done, you can either quickly release the valve or let it come down from pressure on its own.
