How to Make Half and Half
Hi Everyone, it happens more than I would like to admit, I frequently run out of half and half.
And why do I run out of half and half?
Well, first off, it’s so useful an ingredient, I use it in so many recipes from egg recipes to soups, and not to mention my coffee!
Rest assured, this simple method will help you if you have run out of half and half and need to make a substitution.
What is half and half? or What exactly is half-and-half?
Half and half can also be referred to as coffee creamer or creamer and there can be many flavors and varieties available.
When I think of “coffee creamer” however, I think of that as sometimes being sweetened.
Half and half, by itself, doesn’t have added sugar in it – although, if you make it yourself, can choose to add your favorite sweetener and flavors using extracts like mint or vanilla extract to it to make it more customized.
Half and half is equal parts mixture of milk and cream.
Is there a substitute for half-and-half? What is the best substitute for half-and-half?
Yes, you can just use heavy cream and milk in equal ratios.
I think this is the best substitute for half and half.
If you need a vegan option, coconut cream is a great option.
Another option is just using unsalted butter, like in my Butter Coffee recipe (linked below).
Is half and half unhealthy?
Everything is in moderation!
I think half-and-half is healthier if it is homemade because you can control what ingredients are in it.
Consume half and half responsibility!
I enjoy half-and-half in coffee and even tea!
Ingredients
This is the basic recipe that I use over and over (there are other methods too!):
- 1 cup heavy cream or whipping cream
- 1 cup milk (whole, or reduced fat milk)
This works great if you have leftover cream from recipes around the holidays. I find that
Kitchen Tools
- 2-cup wet measure
