How to Pack a Diaper Bag

I am someone who's very "preparation oriented" and when I first became a mom almost 2 ½ years ago, I would pack the diaper in a way so that I would be ready for any situation when I was away from the home with my baby. It wouldn't matter if we were shopping, at a play group, the library, someone's house, an event or a class - I never wanted to be in a position where I didn't have what I needed to take care of my baby, at that moment.

Fast forward to the present, I still walk out of the door with all the essentials I need but I pack lighter since I have an active toddler in tow. I will discuss the different items that are essential and useful to bring along and when they are more useful according to age.

No matter what age your child is, you know your child best and you can take anything I say with a grain of salt and adjust according to you/your child's preferences and lifestyle.

I found them in the diaper section close to the front of the store, near the photo center. I am a member of Costco and there is a new Costco near me which just opened up and I'm really impressed with the store and all it's contents! When I was there, it was really convenient to pick up other things that I needed for the house as well.

Let me tell you those are some good prices! I remember shopping around and comparing prices on diapers after my daughter was born. It's nice to just stock up on diapers so that you do not ever run out.

Step-By-Step How to Pack a Diaper Bag

Step #1 - Start off with an Empty Bag

Make sure that your diaper back starts off as empty. This way you can make sure everything is clean and there's no food or crumbs hidden anywhere or anything that you do not need for that day.

I always make sure whenever I leave the house, that the diaper bag is packed with items specific for that day so I can tailor it for our needs. This way you are not spending time rooting through the bag in search of what you need while going through 8 million things that you needed the other day. Believe me, it saves a lot of frustration because I have had those days when I was in a rush to get somewhere and I just threw in extra things and then the diaper bag was filled to the max with stuff when it really needed to be cleaned out.

Step #2 - Layout what you need for that day

Packing this way is great because you can do it the night before, to save time for the next morning.

Lay everything out on the table so that you can clearly see what you need and what you don't need as you edit what you will bring in the diaper bag.

Step #3 - Cover all the categories

Entertainment

-Does your baby/child have a favorite "lovie," pacifier, teether, durable book? I would bring something small and compact and between 1-3 "entertainment" items.

Diapers & Wipes

-Depending on the age of your child and how long you will be out of the house, you will need to bring a number of diapers. When babies are young they go through more diapers in a day than when they are older. Always bring more than you think you will need and pay attention to how many you go through to gauge for next time.

-I like to bring a package of on-the-go Huggies wipes. It's always good to have more than enough since you can use them for more than just changing diapers, i.e. spilled food and the like.

Comfort

-bring a blanket just in case it's cool weather, or a nursing cover if you need one.

-bring snacks for you and your child (if they are on solids). Make sure they are appropriate to their likes and age.

-bring water for you and your child (if they are old enough to have water)

-bring a sippy cup, bottle, formula (if you are using formula)

-bring a change of clothes (or two) for your child.

-Pro Tip ⇒ If you are nursing, you might want to bring an extra shirt for yourself, just speaking from experience!

Sun protection

-This category depends on the weather but if it's sunny or there any chance of sun, bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
