How to Make Compost from Kitchen Waste

If you're a home cook like me, you spend a lot of time in the kitchen too. That means you leave a few food scraps every time you're cooking. The good news is that composting has a lot of benefits for your plants and soil. There are many ways that you can start doing this!

But how do we make compost from our kitchen scraps? It is actually very easy and doesn't require too much knowledge or skill on your part. All you need to keep in mind are some animal products and oils that can't be used as compost.

By composting, we reduce the waste that we send into landfills. Composting keeps our city clean, protects the soil, and stops air pollution. Making our place more liveable and better.

Easy Ways To Compost Food Waste

• Separate your household waste. You can start by having two trash cans or a separate container for this. The first one is where you'll throw all your kitchen waste, like food scraps, vegetables, fruits, etc. The other one can be for toxic wastes like medicine, wrappers, plastic, glass, etc. You can also recycle paper, plastic cans, and glass bottles so you can still find more purposes for these items.
• Pit composting. Dig a hole outside and bury your leftovers instead of directly throwing them into the trash. If you decide to do this, make sure that it stays there for a long period so that it can destroy loads of harmful bacteria.
• Using a composting tumbler. This is a common method among people who are composting their food wastes. Especially if you don't have a garden outside to make a hole for your leftovers. If you don't have the time to dig outside as well, this is a great alternative. Make sure that you're turning the leftovers or scraps properly every day so it gets enough oxygen to do some composting.
• Compost bin. This is another useful way to compost your kitchen waste. If you have an extra bin lying around, you can set up your own at home. Begin by drilling a hole at the bottom of your bin or bucket so that air can get through inside and also place a tray below for any liquids pouring out. The water that comes out makes an excellent fertilizer too, so you can effectively use this as well.

• Smaller wastes take faster to decompose, so if you have enough time, you can cut up your vegetable and food scraps into minuscule pieces and add them to your compost.

• Use the extra organic manure and fertilizer for your plants.
