Above is a video tutorial of my daughter and I going shopping at Dollar General for Huggies Pull-Ups® and then making a Toddler Shirt out of an onesie to better help her with potty training.
Estimated reading time: 7 minutes
This DIY Toddler Shirt (video + tutorial) is an easy and resourceful way to make your child's clothes last longer through the potty training process.
I'm sharing potty training tips that have helped our household in the potty training process plus more ideas.
Hi Everyone, I recently thought of this tutorial because I have an abundance of 18-month size onesies but not as many non-onesie shirts for my 2-year-old daughter to wear.
She does not like the snaps anymore because they feel confining and at this point they hinder the potty training process because she can not get her clothes on and off as she needs to with her Pull-Ups® Training Pants.
She still fits the shirts themselves and being a resourceful mom, so I decided to make "lemonade" out of the lemons I have and re-purpose these onesies!
I love this tutorial because I do not feel pressure to go out and buy all new shirts for my daughter, plus, at her age - where she likes to run around the store sometimes - it can be difficult to go shopping.
Saving money, time, and headaches - this tutorial a winner for moms and parents all around!
We went to Dollar General to get Huggies Pull-Ups® Training Pants.
I like Huggies Pull-Ups® Training Pants because they are easy for my daughter to manage for potty training, light and not bulky under her clothing. Here is some more information about Pull-Ups® Training Pants:
• Pull-Ups® Training Pants are designed specifically to help teach potty training skills. They look and fit more like underwear, giving your child the independence to slide his pants on and off, while also providing consistency for any learning style throughout his potty training journey.
• The stretchy sides allow toddlers to slide Pull-Ups® Training Pants on and off themselves, teaching valuable skills they can apply later when taking off their pants and underwear to use the potty.
• You may be tempted to use diapers while potty training because they’re more familiar to you, but resist the urge. Toddlers thrive on consistency and diapers don’t teach potty training skills like Pull-Ups® Training Pants do.
Pull-Ups® has teamed up with renowned child psychologist and potty training expert Dr. Heather Wittenberg to create a method that takes the guesswork out of potty training. As a mom, you know there is always some uncertainty when it comes to potty training. Will this work? Will that work? We know kids are like snowflakes, each unique and special in his or her own way. Based on research and observation of personality types in young children, Pull-Ups® has developed five potty training personalities: the Puppy, the Owl, the Bear Cub, the Turtle, and the Squirrel. Take the brief assessment quiz to determine which personality your child resembles. Knowing your child’s potty personality will help you find customized advice and tips to guide you through the potty training journey. Once you take the quiz and implement some of the tips, let me know, did you find this useful? How will knowing your child’s personality impact how you potty train moving forward?
I did the personality assessment quiz and my daughter's personality is a bear (as shown in the screenshot above).
You can take the personality assessment quiz for your child too here.

Kids love to play and it's time that we make potty training fun for parents and kids! Try one of the easy-to-use games and learning tools to help add fun to the potty training process in your house. Choose one or two of the games Pull-Ups® has rounded up on their websites such as the “Pull-Ups Scavenger Hunt” or the “Potty Seek & Find” game. Once you have tried a game, share your experience with your audience. Did you learn something new? Will you continue to implement these games into your potty training routine? Were you surprised at how easy and fun Pull-Ups® makes potty training?
We are still early to part-way in my daughter's potty training journey. Here are some tips for what is working so far in our household:
