Pick Your Own Sour Cherries and Blueberries at Solebury Orchards

Hi Everyone, We recently went to Solebury Orchards in PA, during sour cherry season and early blueberry season and it was so much fun! Please enjoy these photos of our visit.

    Sour Cherries

Cherry season in New Jersey and Pennsylvania is short. The season is in mid-June and lasts about a week! This year the sweet cherry crop at Solebury Orchards got mostly destroyed by the rain. With all the rain, the sweet cherries split. So, we picked the sour cherries which were still good for picking.

Sour cherries are delicious in pies, cakes and jams. I'm actually fermenting some sour cherries now. If they work out, I will share them on the blog.

    Blueberry Season

In New Hampshire, blueberry season lasts 6-8 weeks. Blueberry picking starts after July 4th. Peak season is the end of July to the beginning of August.

My son couldn't resist the blueberries!

It ended up being a good choice for my daughter to wear rain boots because some of the areas of the fields were wet from the irrigation hoses that water the crops.

It was very sunny the day we went and I wish we had brought hats. Luckily, we did not stay out in the sun long. We spend time in the market shop there as well. The kids could only focus on the picking for so long before they got tired and wanted to move onto the next thing.

The blueberry crop was all enclosed in netting to protect the blueberries from birds and other animals from eating them. It makes you feel like you are in this large, outdoor room.

My daughter did a great job picking the blueberries and sour cherries. We spent more time picking the blueberries because they are lower and easier to pick. The orchard provided ladders to help us pick the cherries, though I did not want my kids up on the ladders!

The sour cherries are about half the size of the sweet cherries. They have this pretty, bright red color.

    Blackberry Season

We noticed that the blackberry bushes were looking really healthy at Solebury Orchards. The season for blackberries there is August 1st-August 17, right around the corner!

    29.

Disclaimer: I do not recommend picking any wild berries unless you know that they are 100% edible and what species they are!

    Wineberry Season

We are looking forward to Wineberry (Japanese raspberry) season - they grow in the wild, so they are a foraged berry and we have several Wineberry bushes in our yard. I'm hoping to get some Wineberry recipes on the blog!

Wineberry season is early to mid-July. It's late June right now and they are just starting to look like they will be ready soon. The season is short and only lasts a few weeks.

    30.
