Dragon fruit is in the cactus family. It grows in Mexico and Central America where it is native.
The most common types have bright green and hot pink/red outer scales. On the inside, it has white flesh with black seeds.
There is another variety called yellow dragon fruit that has yellow outer skin and the same inner white flesh and black seeds.
There is a less common type that has red pulp with black seeds too.
Dragon fruit is also called by the names, pitaya, pitahaya, and strawberry pear!
Dragon fruit is called dragon fruit because of its leather-like skin on the fruit's exterior. It has been called dragon fruit since 1963.
If you are eating it fresh, you can just cut it in half and scoop it out or cut it in slices and eat it like watermelon, discarding the rind.
If you are eating it in powdered form, you can mix it into drinks, cocktails, mocktails, smoothies, coffee, or tea (make sure to follow the instructions on the brand's package that you get).
The flesh is pretty bland, it mild in sweetness and the seed has a nutty, earthy taste. The skin is not eaten, only the flesh inside should be eaten.
The flavor of dragon fruit can be described as a cross between a pear and a kiwi.
Dragon fruit powder is pretty mild, its color is a major appeal and it is also said to be very healthy to eat.
It is said that dragon fruit is high in magnesium, boosts iron levels, promotes a healthy gut, high in fiber, and prevents chronic disease.
It is considered a nutrient-dense food!
