Stir Fry Lettuce
Hi Everyone,
I would have named this recipe “Stir-Fried (Iceberg) Lettuce” or “Sauteed (Iceberg) Lettuce” but most people search for “Stir Fry Lettuce,” so I am calling it that!
This is also a great way to use up a head of leftover lettuce!
Stir Frying Iceberg lettuce is not as common (yet) in general, American cuisine but is very common in Chinese cuisine and I’ve heard also in French cuisine as well. On the Chinese side of my family, I remember this being pretty common to do on its own to add to another dish, for example, wonton noodle soup. I think more and more people are catching on to this way of cooking Iceberg lettuce!
You can also try different varieties of lettuce, if you try a different one, and have some findings, let us know in the comments at the end of the post!

- 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
- 1 fresh garlic clove, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon ground, Chinese 5-spice powder
- 2-3 teaspoons of low-sodium, soy sauce
- Iodized fine salt, amount to taste, for serving
- ground white pepper or fresh ground black pepper, amount to taste, for serving
Kitchen Tools
- wok
- spatula
- measuring spoons & cups

- serving utensils
How to Make Stir Fry Lettuce
Step 1
On the stovetop, add the olive oil and sesame oil to a wok over medium heat. Add the minced garlic, and 5-spice powder seasoning, and stir. As the oil heats up, add the Iceberg lettuce, drizzle the soy sauce and stir until the lettuce is coated, if the lettuce is piled high, you can cover the wok and let the lettuce cook down before stirring more.
Step 2
Cook the lettuce until it is wilted and cooked through, this should take only a few minutes (1-2 minutes, depending on the heat of your burner). The lettuce will give off water as it cooks and you can use this sauce to pour over the rice or noodles if you plan to eat it that way. You can leave it uncovered and cook off the excess liquid but that will make the lettuce softer. Enjoy over rice, noodles, in soup, or as a part of another recipe!
