Easy Basil Mozzarella Poutine
Hi Everyone, a bowl of crispy, delicious shoestring French fries, with pearl-size Mozzarella, covered in hot beef gravy and topped with chopped basil and Italian parsley – this, my friends, is the Summer version of Poutine.
I have been eyeing poutine recipes for months but always feeling like I can’t “get around” to making it. I don’t know why, it’s certainly not hard! It has just three components: Fries, cheese curds and brown gravy.
Thoughts like, “where am I going to get cheese curds in an American grocery?” crossed my mind and then, “Yeah, I can make it but it wouldn’t be authentic enough.” Well, guess what? You can enjoy a poutine recipe, make it happen and make it YOUR way for your region of the world – so I did!
I covered my poutine recipe in fresh basil and Italian parsley that I grew in my garden. The fresh herbs add a fragrant, crispness that cuts through the gravy and crunchy Fries.
The pearl-size Mozzarella goes perfectly with the fresh basil and Italian parsley.

What is Poutine?
Let’s start off about Poutine, do you know about it? It’s traditional dish out of Canadian province of Quebec. It is defined as a dish of French fries, topped with cheese curds and then a brown gravy (beef or a combination of beef and chicken gravy).
Wait, “cheese curds? What the what?
Okay, so we live in America and I have to say, I do not usually see “cheese curds” in the grocery store, I know we have them but it’s certainly not a common American grocery ingredient.
So what’s the next best thing? Enter pearl-size Mozzarella balls. They are close in shape and size, it’s a soft, white cheese which makes it a perfect substitute.
I want to also mention that you could try goat cheese, queso fresco or another mild-flavored, fresh, soft, white cheese – made to be in small, curd-size shapes. If you have other suggestions, I would love to hear in the comments below. I would love to try more versions of poutine – the more, the better!
