If you're looking for a fun and sustainable way to add some greenery to your kitchen, regrowing romaine lettuce is a great place to start. Not only is it easy and cost-effective, but it's also a great way to reduce food waste and enjoy fresh greens all year round. In this post, we'll show you how to regrow romaine lettuce in just a few simple steps.
Hey Everyone, Sara here! Regrowing Romaine Lettuce is a fun activity that I do with my kids. It teaches them about propagating plants from cuttings, how to reduce food waste, how to be resourceful, and how to nurture plants.
The photos in this post are of actual Romaine Lettuce cuttings that we grew and then planted in our kitchen garden - the kitchen garden that provides many of the plant-based ingredients for the recipes on this blog! You can do this activity year-round - depending on where you live but a great time to do it is in the early Spring and Summer, during the growing season, because then you can plant those growing cuttings right into your garden or container when they are ready!
Beyond just being a fun thing to do, I think it teaches them independence too. The notion is that if they can make something grow, they can rely on their own abilities and skills. There are so many life lessons that we can show through action, right in a corner of the kitchen and in our gardens, no matter what size space you have to work with!
Even if you do not have kids and are just doing this on your own, it's a cost-saving practical practice to do with vegetable cuttings and stretches those hard-earned dollars. Yesterday, for example, I make a whole, fresh salad for our family, from our Romain Lettuce cutting plants that are now thriving in the garden. That's 1 salad that I did not have to buy ingredients for in the grocery store, in that instance. Gardening truly yields dividends in so many ways!
Prepare the Lettuce Base: To regrow romaine lettuce, you'll need the base of a fresh head of lettuce. Start by cutting off the bottom inch of the lettuce head, where the roots grow. Be sure to leave about an inch of lettuce attached to the base.
Add Water: Place the lettuce base in a jar or glass filled with about an inch of water. Be sure to change the water every few days to prevent bacteria growth.
Wait for the Roots to Grow: Place the jar or glass in a sunny spot, and wait for the roots to grow. This should take about 7-10 days. Once the roots have grown to about an inch, you can transplant the lettuce to a pot or directly into your garden.
Transplant the Lettuce: Fill a pot or container with potting soil, and make a small hole for the lettuce base. Carefully place the base in the soil, and cover the roots with soil. Water the soil thoroughly.
Care for Your Lettuce: Place the pot or container in a sunny spot, and water the soil regularly to keep it moist. Your lettuce should start to grow within a few days, and you can harvest the leaves as they grow. Be sure to cut the leaves at the base, and leave the base in the soil to regrow.
Regrowing romaine lettuce is a fun and easy way to add some greenery to your kitchen, and it's a great way to reduce food waste. By following these simple steps, you can enjoy fresh and sustainable greens all year round. So why not give it a try? Your taste buds and your wallet will thank you!
