Heather Flower Tea
Hi Everyone, how’s everyone’s January going?
For me, it’s been a “recovery month” after December.
January is a time to seek restoration, one might be nursing a cough and/or cold or general fatigue from last month’s holidays.
This Heather Flower Tea is the perfect, herbal, hot tea drink for Wintertime or any time of the year when you find yourself in need of restoration.
A few weeks ago, a sinus cold swept through our house and this Heather Flower Tea was just what was needed to make us feel better.
The tea that dried heather flowers make is strong and very “herbal” and this is what makes it so good when one is in need of a strong cup of tea.
My personal anecdotal experience is that it kicked my lingering cough (I had had for weeks) right to the curb.
Where Can I Get Heather Flowers?
For this Heather Flower Tea recipe, we are using dried, food-grade heather flowers from bMAKER.
I linked to the herb kit I have that can be purchased from Amazon.com (I’ve included the link below).
What are Heather Flowers Like?
Heather flowers are very fragrant.
They have a pretty, floral scent but they also remind me of the scent of the forest, a clean, beautiful forest.
They are pink and the mix that bMAKER has includes the twiggy little branches too, so the mix has brown and green tones too – all beautiful, natural colors.
As quoted from the Heather Flower bMAKER package:
Heather Flowers are a traditional remedy in herbal medicine and a traditional beer making ingredient in Europe.
Beer making?! One of these days I would love to try making beer at home (I’ve already been making kombucha); I’ll be sure to let you know if I do.
Health Benefits of Heather Flower Tea
Among Heather Flower Tea’s health benefits are:
- aids in treatment of kidney and bladder issues, including disinfection of urinary tract
- aids in prevention and treatment of gout, arthritis and rheumatism
- a helpful cold and cough home remedy (this is the number 1 thing I use heather flower tea for!)
- aids in remedying various gastrointestinal issues
Several years ago, my husband Eric had kidney stones, to the point that he had to have surgery to remove them, if I had known about the health benefits of Heather Flower tea back then, I would have definitely made some for him.
Side Effects of Heather Flower Tea
When taking heather flower tea, please keep in mind there are potential side effects associated with this tea and you should not have more than 1-2 cups of tea at a time:
- too much heather flower tea can cause liver damage
- pregnant and breastfeeding women should not drink heather flower tea
- heather flower tea is strong enough that it can alter the effects of some medication (especially ones that are related to the urinary and digestive tract). We are not doctors, so I advise you to talk to your doctor, if you have any concerns about having this tea!
